Everyday Habits That Are Hurting Your Eyes - And How to Fix Them. Pt 1.

Your eyes work hard every single day — from the moment you check your phone in the morning to when you scroll one last time before bed. But many of our everyday routines are quietly straining, drying, and damaging our eyes over time. The good news? Small, consistent changes can make a huge difference in keeping your vision healthy and comfortable.

Here are 5 common habits that could be hurting your eyes — and how to fix them.

1. Staring at Screens for Hours

The problem: Prolonged screen time reduces your blink rate, causing dryness, irritation, and digital eye strain.
Fix it: Follow the 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. And don’t forget to blink!

2. Rubbing Your Eyes

The problem: Rubbing can break tiny blood vessels, worsen allergies, and even contribute to corneal damage over time.
Fix it: If your eyes itch or feel irritated, use artificial tears or a cool compress instead.

3. Sleeping in Contacts

The problem: It limits oxygen flow to your corneas, increasing your risk of serious infections.
Fix it: Always remove your contacts before bed — even if they’re labeled “extended wear.” Your eyes need to breathe overnight.

4. Skipping Sunglasses

The problem: UV rays can cause long-term damage, leading to cataracts and macular degeneration.
Fix it: Invest in sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays — and wear them year-round, even on cloudy days.

5. Wearing Old Makeup

The problem: Expired mascara or eyeliner can harbor bacteria that lead to eye infections.
Fix it: Replace mascara every 3 months and eyeliner every 6 months. Always remove makeup before bed to keep your lash line clean.
